Statistics on Global Extreme Poverty
* Current State:
* 8.5% of the global population—almost 700 million people—live on less than $2.15 per day, which is the extreme poverty line.
* Three-quarters of people in extreme poverty live in Sub-Saharan Africa or in fragile and conflict-affected countries.
* Historical Progress:
* Over the past few decades, the world has made significant progress in reducing extreme poverty. However, recent crises have reversed some of these gains.
* By 2030, it is projected that 622 million people (7.3% of the global population) will still live in extreme poverty if current trends continue.
* Impact on Vulnerable Groups:
* Children are disproportionately affected, with more than half of those living in extreme poverty being under the age of 18.
Solutions to Global Extreme Poverty
* Economic Growth and Job Creation:
* Creating jobs in poverty-stricken communities is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty. This can be achieved through infrastructure development, renewable energy projects.
* Education:
* Ensuring access to quality education for all children is crucial. Education empowers individuals and provides them with the skills needed to improve their economic situation.
* Gender Equality:
* Addressing gender inequality is essential. Empowering women and girls can lead to better economic outcomes for families and communities.
* Healthcare Access:
* Providing basic healthcare services helps prevent diseases that can trap families in poverty. This includes maternal and child health services.
* Clean Water and Sanitation:
* Ensuring access to clean water and sanitation can significantly improve health outcomes and reduce poverty.
* Social Protection Systems:
Strengthening social protection systems, such as unemployment benefits and food assistance programs, can provide a safety net for the most vulnerable.
The GCCC addresses the severe and persistent issues faced by residents in NYCHA and public housing, including inadequate maintenance, poor living conditions, and lack of access to essential services. These challenges significantly impact the quality of life and well-being of thousands of New Yorkers and millions more around the globe.
Innovative Solution: To tackle these problems, GCCC has developed a comprehensive community support platform that leverages technology to streamline reporting and resolution of maintenance issues. Our platform includes a mobile app that allows residents to report problems in real-time, track the status of their requests, and access resources for legal and social support. Additionally, we use data analytics to identify and prioritize the most critical issues, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
As hunger worsens, we’re growing as fast as we can to meet the need.
Last year, 44 million of our neighbors went to bed hungry–a 31% jump from the previous year, and the biggest increase since 2008.
Through our tech-enabled food helpline, personalized food access dashboards, and an online resource directory, we’ve grown to serve millions of households every day across eleven regions since 1995
Our impact goes beyond a single meal, translating into substantial, lasting support that prioritizes the humanity of our neighbors in need.
Global Citizen Community Center serves 193 countries that are members of the UN with more launches planned in 2025.
